Strike decision to put Boeing in trouble
Production at Boeing Co.’s Seattle headquarters was disrupted after members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers rejected a contract offer and voted to strike.
The strike, which began at midnight Friday, was the first since 2008 in the region of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents 33,000 Boeing workers on the US West Coast.
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers rejected a call for peace from new Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, who has promised to reorganize labor relations, and defied the advice of their own union leaders to accept terms that include a guaranteed 25 percent wage increase over four years.
While this is the largest wage increase ever offered by the aircraft manufacturer, workers had expected a much larger increase. The terms also eliminated the annual bonus, which created a negative atmosphere.
