Iran: We launched the attack on Israel in self-defense
Iran said the missile attack on Israel was carried out “in accordance with the right of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.”
AA correspondent obtained a letter sent by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Amir Saeed Iravani to the UN Security Council.
In the letter, it was reported that Iran launched a missile attack against Israeli military and security targets on Tuesday evening.
The letter stated that the attack was carried out “in accordance with the right of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter,” adding that it was in response to the “Zionist regime’s” violations against Iran’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The letter noted that these violations include the assassination of Iran’s official guest, Hamas Political Bureau Head Ismail Heniyye, the wounding of its ambassador in Lebanon, and the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a senior Iranian military advisor.
The letter stated that the attacks targeted only military and security facilities in accordance with ethical principles and international humanitarian law, unlike the “Zionist regime” which targets innocent civilians, and regretted the failure of the UNSC to fulfill its basic duty.
The letter noted that the inaction of the UNSC allows Israel to violate all red lines, arguing that this leaves Iran with no choice but to preserve its right to self-defense in accordance with international law.
